Birdwatching for Beginners Learn how to identify and appreciate the many species of birds in Western New York. We'll not only discuss how to identify them, but where to look and how to attract them. We will also compare some of the binoculars, spotting scopes, and field guides used by many birders. This workshop can be used as a one or two hour seminar, but may also be presented as a series of classes focusing on the different aspects of birding, with field trips to see birds firsthand. |

An in-depth look at the fine points of bird identification, geared to take your appreciation of birds to the next level. This program can be presented as an overview of the different types of birds, or as a series of classes dealing with different groups of birds, such as raptors, waterfowl, and songbirds.
The Birds of Western New York
This region enjoys some of the finest year-round birding in the United States. Over 300 species were seen in 1999 alone! We will focus on the what, when, and where of species occurring in the area. This seminar will highlight the beauty and diversity of the birds, and help you to optimize your efforts in appreciating them.
Masters of the Air
Braddock Bay, near Rochester, is the premier spring site for hawkwatching in the Eastern United States. An average of over 50,000 hawks, eagles, vultures, falcons, and other raptors are seen every spring on their return to northern breeding grounds. This seminar will feature the species seen, as well as the corresponding time of year and conditions responsible for this amazing phenomenon.
A Wave of Waterbirds
Every year, hundreds of thousands of waterbirds, such as loons, grebes, swans, geese, ducks, jaegers, gulls, and terns, migrate along the southern shore of Lake Ontario. Hamlin Beach State Park is the best location for observing this spectacle. The timing, conditions, and topography of this enormous movement of birds will be discussed in this seminar.
Autumn in the Manzanos
Accompany a raptor biologist into the heart of the Manzano Mts. in New Mexico. You will live at the top of a mountain for two months, monitoring the hawk migration and experiencing the birds and nature all around you, as the seasons change from summer to winter. This slide show captures the natural history of a different climate.
